Today I’ve been working on some harmonies for ‘Hannah’.
I decided to leave the new song (‘Clean The Fan’) for a day. Sometimes I find myself getting too familiar with a song, and start messing around with it too much that I end up nowhere. So sometimes it’s good to be working on more that one song at a time.
I’ve done one verse and one chorus. The choruses are usually the same, but I like to make each one slightly different. I like to add different harmonies or slightly change the bass line or something like that.
I like to think of it as mixed bag of sweets. Having lots to choose from makes them more interesting, but if it’s filled full of cola bottles or boot laces then it becomes a bit too boring. Also, having too big a bag, i.e. a song longer than 4 minutes, can also make it a bit boring.
Anyway, what I’ve done is:
I’ve made 9 mono audio tracks and panned 3 left, 3 center and 3 right.
Then I’ve listened to the whole song, with the microphone on, ready to record and roughly sung the ideas that came to mind.
Then I went back to the start and slowly proceeded to develop those ideas as I went along.
It’s hard, deciding where the harmonies should come in. I find that it makes it easier if I treat them as three different groups of people, listening in and voicing their opinion when they’ve got something to say or want to emphasize a certain point.
I also like them to say things in the background. But that can sometimes be confusing if you don’t do it right. A good way that I’ve found is to construct the background phrase out of words that the main vocal is singing at that particular time. That way it lessens the amount of different words you have to take in.
So, all I have left to do is the second verse, the break and add a few extra harmonies on the choruses…
Hoy he estado trabajando en las armonías para “Hannah”.
He decidido dejar la nueva canción (‘Clean The Fan’) para otro día. A veces me familiarizo demasiado con una canción, y empiezo a liarlo todo tanto que no termino en ningún sitio. Así que a veces es bueno estar trabajando en más de una canción al mismo tiempo.
He hecho una estrofa y un estribillo. Los estribillos normalmente son el mismo, pero me gusta hacerlos cada uno un poco diferentes. Me gusta añadir diferentes armonías o cambiar un poco la línea del bajo o algo así.
Me gusta pensar en ello como en una bolsa de dulces variados. Teniendo un montón donde elegir para hacerlos más interesantes, pero si está llena de botellas de cola o cordones de zapatos entonces se vuelve un poco más aburrido. También, el tener una bolsa demasiado grande, por ejemplo una canción de más de 4 minutos, puede volver a hacerlo demasiado aburrido.
De todas formas, esto es lo que he hecho:
He hecho 9 pistas de audio mono, giradas 3 a la izquierda, 3 al centro y 3 a la derecha.
Entonces he escuchado la canción entera, con el micrófono encendido, listo para grabar y cantar brutalmente las ideas que me venían a la mente.
Luego he vuelto al principio y he procedido a desarrollar lentamente esas ideas conforme me venían.
Es duro, decidir dónde van a ir las armonías. Me parece que se hace más fácil si las trato como tres grupos diferentes de personas, escuchando y dando sus opiniones cuando tengo algo que decir o quiero enfatizar algo en concreto.
También me gusta que digan cosas de fondo. Pero eso puede resultar confuso a veces si no lo haces bien. Una buena forma que he encontrado es construir la frase del fondo con palabras que la voz principal está cantando en un momento específico. Esa forma reduce la cantidad de palabras diferentes que tengas que usar.
Así que, todo lo que me queda por hacer es la segunda estrofa, el descanso y añadir algunas armonías extras al estribillo…
So, I sort of got distracted the other day, with this song..
It’s going well and I have all the lyrics done already! I’ve also done the drums, guitar, bass AND recorded the main vocal track, all in a weekend!!!! When I’m inspired and motivated, ideas come so fast!!
The trouble is that it uses up a lot of my time. Sometimes I get so involved that I go passed the hunger stage and then start feeling sick! But I’m a bit more conscious of it now and don’t let it happen as much…
Anyway, hopefully this new song shouldn’t take long. I’ve already started on the harmonies.
I’ve decided to call the song ‘Clean The Fan’ because it’s about my computer fan. Look at how dusty it is!
I had quite a job getting to it, that’s why I’m writing a song about it. I know, I know, the subject sounds petty, but me and ‘Joe!’ have got an idea for a video, that goes very well with it and it’s going to be a funny song that also has a little dig at ‘HP’, for a stupid design! So there’s that, for you all to look forward to!!!

¡Va bien y ya tengo toda la letra! También tengo la batería, la guitarra el bajo. Y he grabado la pista de la voz principal, ¡¡¡ todo en un fin de semana!!!! ¡¡Cuando estoy inspirado y motivado, las ideas vienen tan rápido!!
El problema es cuando se lleva un montón de mi tiempo. A veces me involucro tanto que se me pasa la fase del hambre ¡y entonces empiezo a sentirme enfermo! Pero soy un poco más consciente de ello ahora y no dejo que me ocurra tanto…
De todas formas, con suerte esta nueva canción no me llevará demasiado. Ya he empezado con las armonías.
He decidido llamar a la canción “Clean the fan” porque va sobre el ventilador de mi ordenador. ¡Mirad lo polvoriento que está!
Me llevó bastante trabajo llegar a él, por eso escribo una canción sobre ello. Lo sé, lo sé, el tema suena nimio, pero Joe! y yo tenemos una idea para un vídeo, que va muy bien con eso y va a ser una canción divertida que también tiene una pequeña indirecta para ‘HP’, ¡por un diseño estúpido! Así que ahí va eso, ¡¡¡para todos a los que les interese!!!

So just slow down cos we’re still learning.. Meaning; “not too sure” on the relationship. And “slow down” as in; take time to reflect on what’s important, instead of just arguing because the body is feeling angry.

Storng enough to build.. (a future on).Basically, the memories of all the good times that they’ve spent together should reinforce the reason to persevere through the hard times.

And you still hold to a point even though you know,
I proved you wrong but you can’t let it go,
Because you don’t want to be the loser. Again, just another silly argument.

Hannah.. (I put the word “Hannah” in there, purely out of laziness. I needed a two syllable word, so I thought that maybe it could be the guy talking to a girl called “Hannah”, I think I’ll call the song “Hannah” just to make it seem more deliberate!)

So just slow down cos we’re still learning.. Significado: “No demasiado segura” en la relación. Y “ve con calma” como en; toma un tiempo para reflexionar sobre qué es más importante, en lugar de sólo discutir porque el cuerpo se siente enfadado.

Hannah.. (Pongo la palabra “Hannah” ahí, sobre todo por pereza. Necesitaba una palabra de dos sílabas, así que pensé que quizás podía ser el chico llamando a la chica “Hannah”, Creo que llamaré a la canción “Hannah” ¡sólo para que parezca más creíble!)
